I’m doing something called ‘Operation Escape’ with Scouts, where we go hiking alone in Cleveland for three days and try to avoid being ‘captured’ by the leaders. It’ll just be me and my boyfriend hiking and camping together, so I’m worried that we might forget something.
We’ve got a sleeping bag, tent, first aid kit, food, torch and a stove ect.
Is there anything else I might need?

While it may be scary when an emergency happens, most of the time we won’t be alone. Many families and individuals come together to help one another. I don’t eat much. I often have to force myself to eat. I live mainly on black beans and rice, lentils cooked in onions and garlic, and some fruit and some orange vegetable with beta carotene. I usually drink herbal tea without caffeine. I have to remember to eat meat about three times a week or I will get sick/weak/tired.

My friend is just the opposite. He lives to ingest calories. I am trying to tell him he needs to stop this. The second he stops his big weight lifting program (and he will have to, he is wearing out his elbows and knees) he is going to look like a manatee and he will start waddling. Whatever. You can’t tell people anything.

So we go camping, and he wants all the death food/artery cloggers. Pancakes, with liquid death sugar syrup, cholesterol fried eggs, pure fat bacon, and 30 grams of sugar per cup orange juice. He should just shoot himself. It will hurt less to die that way. So I cook all this c*** on a coleman white gas stove, and watch him eat it, trying not to get nausea. The things you do for the people you care about.

He said I cooked everything perfectly (wait for the BUT) but, he was disappointed he didn’t have toast.

Oh, great. Now he has found an excuse for more butter and maybe some high sugar jelly. Sigh. This is a losing battle. I think I will ask him to pick out a plot and pre paid care at Forest Lawn Cemetary, so when his heart implodes, we will be all set.

So how do you make TOAST on a Coleman, white gas two burner stove? How is THAT done?
Note: California has wildfires. You light up a campfire, and the Ranger will shoot you and dance on your bones. California camping is STOVE only (and in summer, not even THAT) and that is only with a PERMIT.

ultralight knife

This is only the second knife I’ve made. Went surprisingly quick though I left some heat marks from the cutting. Makes no difference to the knife’s hardness, temper or strength. It’s just not quite as pretty. Will be sure to take it slower on the next one.

Once I found the right putty knife (which took about a week) making the actual blade took about an hour. Most of which was researching and then sketching a blade shape.

It’s modeled after a Sami or Leuku knife a traditional blade made by the Sami reindeer herders in Siberia. There’s are typically at least twice as long my 4.25" blade, made from truck leaf springs, and used for cutting meat and chopping reindeer bone among other things.

My version is to light to chop but it splits well with a mallet or baton. BTW, I use a 1.2 ounce bow saw blade with a handle improvised from green branches for actual cutting.

The key is having a nice table belt sander. Makes it extremely easy to put an edge on.

This one I created specifically for splitting wood and making feather sticks for winter bike touring with my wood stove.

Yes, you did read correctly above. I did make it out of a putty knife. A Red Devil brand, extra stiff, 4.25" putty knife. Lots of extra material to cut the blade out of. Cost me about .50 at Menards. LOL

The reason I used a Putty knife is because more then sharpness I needed a blade that would be light and that I could beat the heck out of with a mallet or baton without breaking it. My first version I used a hardened steal file. It was to heavy and I still ended up breaking it.

Took me a while to find the right putty knife because it had to be stiff enough and have metal throughout the handle. The original plan was to replace the handle with my own lighter version, but the original handle was so nice I kept it.

The end weight is impressive for a 4.25" fixed blade knife. Only 3.4 ounces. Not sure what it would weigh without the handle but I’m very pleased with it as is.

Now all I have to do is make the sheath.

I’m thinking automotive plastic. I have leather but I think the plastic will be a lot lighter.

Can stove, with alcohol storage around of the wick and control the flame.

Kabobs is not a bad idea, or you can take all those veggies and put them in aluminum foil and “Steam” them. Hot dogs are always easy too. Dont forget about Smores as desert.

Question by NickieD: While traveling, I would like to camp as I go instead of getting a hotel room. Any advice?
I plan on doing some serious cross country traveling in the next month. I think it would be fun/cost efficient to camp at night instead of getting a hotel room. Since I am not really long term camping, but just staying the night… any advice on neccessities to bring? I will also be traveling alone and I am a young woman… and tips on staying safe? Places to find cheap gear that I might need? Just any camp/traveling advice would be awesome!

Should I invest in a little cook stove instead of trying to heat things over an open fire?

Yes you should invest in a heating device. There is a cool one burner that runs on butane canisters about the size of a spray paint can. Neat, clean and just right for 1 or 2 people. Wal Mart carries the butane and I believe they have the stove as well.

Get yourself a small easy to handle tent and sleeping pad(a roll out one, not inflatable type) and sleeping bag. You may be able to find the tent and pad on Craigslist or similar, buy the bag new.

Camp in real campgrounds, whether state run or private. They will be more secure and many offer shower/bathroom facilities. Put together a box (coolers work great for this) of “stuff” Talk to camping people about what this means but the idea is things you take for granted at home. Utensils, all manner of eating devices, aluminum foil, toilet paper, bug spray, dish detergent, matches, hatchet, the list goes on and on.

Get yourself or make a first aid kit. Doesn’t have to be elaborate, it could fit under the seat of your car.

It doesn’t have to be extensive but you will be happy you have the basics of living especially if you have never camped before.

We were lucky to find this old scrap metal at the abandoned miner’s shack. It served well as a stove top.

Sudden over at bplite.com came up with a really great way to load the stove. Let’s call it the “Sudden Technique” I did another video right after making this one that shows the load of twigs being top lit using Indian Grass as tinder. That video will be used as an instruction video for those that have purchased the Woodgaz stove.
